Just a place for me to gather my thoughts

Let’s try again…

I wonder if wordpress will actually let me post something today instead of deciding to eat my carefully thought out words. Only one way to find out I suppose…
Here’s an update on what’s happening in the world of Bev.

  • I’ve been at the new job one month today. I’m loving it so far. Everyone is nice, there’s lots for me to do and I can actually make mistakes without worrying that I may be (metaphorically) hung, drawn and quartered for it. Not that I purposely go out of my way to make mistakes or anything… but you know what i mean…
  • The one bad thing about work is all the commuting. An hour’s train journey means having to get up at a ridiculous hour of the morning, meaning by the time it gets to Wednesday I’m exhausted (of course, it doesn’t help that I have a boyfriend who is incapable of coming home at a sensible time, meaning we rarely get to sleep before midnight). And by the time I’ve sat on the train for an hour in the evening there isn’t exactly much time left for me to have a life outside work. All this will (hopefully) change now though. I’ve been paid, so for October I have a ticket for the fast train. My travel time is now reduced to 20 minutes each way, meaning I get an extra half hour in bed. Yippee!
  • My brother started university last week. He also turns 19 on Friday. I now feel old! Also, I haven’t managed to get him a present yet. Ooops.
  • I needed to take 20 photos after work today to complete my photo challenge for this month. I managed to take 5, leaving me with a grand total of 35. I think it’s fairly safe to say I’ve failed this month. maybe 50 photos was a little over ambitious…
  • My grandparents are having a party next friday to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. After looking at what felt like a million airline’s websites, Jan and I have finally managed to book flights. We’re going via Amsterdam of all places. Why can’t somebody just start providing a direct flight from Southern Germany to Newcastle? It would make my life so much easier!
  • Everyone seems to have gone baby mad at the moment! One of my dad’s cousins has just had a baby boy and I know 7 other people who are currently pregnant. 2 of those people are my dad’s cosuins. And another of his cousins is getting married in January.  My family just will not stop growing! It’s almost like we’re trying to take over the world…

OK, I think that’s everything. And even if it isn’t I need to stop now so I can go and sort out some food. Hopefully Jan won’t be too much longer… it’s 10 past nine now and lunch time was soooo long ago…

I was going to revive question time…

Those of you who’ve been reading for a while may remember question time. Basically I check my blog stats, find the most interesting search engine terms that have led people here then list them in a blog post, complete with my answers/comments. Unfortunately the most interesting searches I’ve had in months are “bee carving” (my first thought was ‘what?!’, closely followed by ‘poor bees!’) and “how to tell who sent you an anonymous valentine” (uh, you don’t. That’s why it’s anonymous). All the rest are even more boring, which does not a good question time make. And so I’m left with… nothing. I can’t even tell you about my weekend because I spent yesterday at work (company anniversary event) and we all know blogging about work can never be good. So instead you get a non-post type post, which I’m only writing because nothing’s happening on Facebook and I need some excuse not to go and mop the kitchen floor…

I can’t even think of a title never mind write a decent post…

I know, my blog has been terrible lately. I’m even boring myself, and that takes some doing. I’m sorry people! But I haven’t managed to make it home before 8pm once this week, and once I do get in there’s still food to be made and everything. It’s kind of difficult to be interesting in these circumstances. I’m sure I’ll manage to write something that’s worth reading soon though. Just give me a week… or three.

So today the course materials arrived for my next Open University course. I’m doing to the October presentation of “Science Starts Here”. Don’t ask me how I think I’m going to manage to work full time, write a dissertation and complete an OU course all at the same time.  I’m still in hands over ears, lalala I’m not listening mode on that one at the moment. I’m sure I’ll work something out though…

Umm, I’m sure I should have more to say. I just can’t remember what it is…

While everyone else was sleeping. Well, everyone but the joggers.

I stayed at the boyfriend’s place last night. Haven’t done that for a while. Not since before I started the new job anyway.
The boyfriend lives further away from the train station than I do. That, combined with the fact that a) there are next to no trams that actual go to the train station from that direction and b) it’s a 10 minute walk from his flat to the tram stop no matter which one I choose to go to meant I had to leave the house at 6:30 today. That’s 6:30 a.m people. That’s a.m as in too bloody early. A.m as in even the birds weren’t up yet. The joggers were up though. Oh yes, there were lots of them. Some of them in shorts. Shorts! At 6:30 a.m! In mid-September! It wasn’t even light yet! I will never understand people who volunatrily get up in the middle of the night to go jogging. Far better to spend an extra hour in bed and have chocolate for breakfast. Embrace your inner glutton, that’s what I say!

Nothing to say ’cause I’ve said it all anyway

Sometimes I wonder why I bother writing new blog posts. Everything I have to say has already happened to me a some point anyway. I might as well just post a link to a previous blog post and let you all read that instead.
But, of course, we all know I could never do that. So you’re just going to have to put up with the fact that my life is incredibly repetitive. Ha!

So the boyfriend is at his choir thing, which is apparantly not a competition at all. It’s just something that choirs can turn up at and sing. Or something. To be honest I don’t even know where it is, never mind what it is, which probably say something about how much we’ve been communicating lately (I didn’t even know until Friday that it was happening this weekend!)

Last night we went to see Up. Very good film, and not just for kids. The story was brilliant. It made me cry though. Grr, I hate crying in the cinema! But at least I wasn’t the only one… I saw at least two other people rubbing their eyes. We went to the 9pm showing, so obviously there were no kids around. Instead the entire room was filled with couples (apart from one middle-aged man at the end of our row who seemed to be alone). I wonder how many of the guys actually wanted to go and see that particular film? ;-)

Anyway, despite yesterday’s good intentions I still haven’t managed to clean my flat (no surprises there then) so I’m off to do it before I think of any more excuses to put it off…
Hope you’ve all had a great weekend!

No rest for the wicked…

Jan’s choir are taking part in some competition tomorrow, so today they’re having an extra practice to prepare. He went to meet them at 12. When I asked what time he’d be back he told me it depends how long everyone can stay for but “probably around 3:30 pm”. That means I’ll be on my own for most of today, and then again tomorrow while they’re competing. And being home alone means I have no excuse not to get on with the housework, which I’ve been ignoring all week because after work I barely have time to make tea never mind clean the shower.
Housework weekend it is then. Unless anyone would like to send me a maid? We could call it an early Christmas present…

What do you mean it’s Wednesday tomorrow?

Time is just flying by at the moment. I can’t believe I’m into my third week at work already! It’s probably a good thing though – if it’s going fast I must be enjoying it, right? I mean, we all know what they say about time flying…

So last week was the 5 year reunion of the very first year I spent in Karlsruhe. I was one of the group of internationals who did their year abroad in 2003/04 (yes, I do realise 2003 was 6 years ago. Obviously it was the 5 year reunion of when we left). The first of the group, and probably the person I most wanted to see, arrived on Sunday 6th September, which is why I cooked dinner that day. There were 6 of us and I made pumpkin lasagne. It was a total experiment… I had never made anything with pumpkin before, never mind lasagne, but it turned out great.
Monday was my day of rest, then on Tuesday the next group arrived, and from that night on things were just crazy. Most nights I went to meet the others straight from work, coming home just in time to fall into bed before starting all over again the next day. I’m in desperate need of sleep now, but it was all good fun and really great to see the others again. None of us seem to have changed much… the only difference is now we have grown up jobs. And 2 sets of couples who met back then are married now. The last of the group departed yesterday but we’ve already decided when the next reunion will be… in 5 years time, 2014. But this time we’re doing it in August so that the teachers can make it as well.

Taking multi-tasking to the extreme

I’ve been busy, busy, busy for the past few days, which is why I didn’t blog over the weekend or get round to replying to all the comments on my last post (bear with me, I will get there!) The weekend was fun, with a trip to Heidelberg and me cooking dinner for friends… one of whom I hadn’t seen for 5 years. I will tell you aaall about it soon, but right now I am trying to cook, hand wash some clothes and do the dishes all at the same time. I just wanted to leave a quick note to let you know I’m still alive and that the new job is still going well. I will return to the blogosphere as soon as I can, but not before the end of this week…

The changing of the seasons

I actually feel kind of bad that I didn’t have time to post yesterday. It meant the whingey post about my boyfriend not coming over ended up still being there even after it wasn’t true any more. Choir practice was cancelled this week so he did end up coming round last night after all. And, miracle of all miracles, I actually managed to sleep. There’s no way this can be coincidence!

So, up until this week I had managed to successfully ignore the signs that autumn is almost upon us. Partly because it was still August, and I refuse to let my birthday month be in any season other than summer, but also because I wasn’t having to get up so early (I guess there are advantages to unemployment after all) so by the time I was awake the sun was as well. I can’t avoid it any longer though. So far I haven’t had to leave the house in the dark yet but it is necessary to turn on the light when I get up for work.
How can it be this close to the end of the year already? I’m not ready to dig out my winter clothes yet!
