Thanks to the miracles of German efficiency we have actually had Internet in the new flat since Tuesday. Unfortunately we weren’t quite as quick with the furniture building, meaning the desk which the computer will stand on is still in bits and the computer is not yet connected. So I can only get online when Jan has his work laptop here and is around to log me on to it. Which is why I haven’t been able to blog despite having the Internet. Things are progressing though. Admittedly very slowly, but even slow progress is progress. The painting is all finished now, and yesterday we picked up the sofa from Jan’s old place. It’s looking a bit lost in the only corner of the living room that isn’t piled high with boxes, but it’s here and can be sat on. Result! We also got the spare bed put together last night (or rather MY bed, which has now been banished to the spare bedroom where it will be used roughly once a year), so my guest will actually have somewhere to sleep when she arrives on 31st May. Now all we have to do is make the rest of the flat suitable for viewing through the eyes of a guest… I’d better stop blogging and get on with it then! Thank goodness for public holidays – no work today = extra time for getting furniture put together! Now where did we put the screws for Jan’s desk?…
First things first… some photographs for those who requested them (or actually just answered my question with a yes, but you know what I mean…).
We’ll start in the bedroom, just because those are the photos that appear first in the folder…
Photo one is the chest of drawers (well, duh! Talk about stating the obvious!). Currently looking very neat and tidy, but I’m sure it won’t be long before the same chaos that reigns on every other sufrace in the flat has made it on to there to. *sigh*. That cardboard box you see to the left of the drawers contains the bedside table. It was only put up yesterday and I was working on my dissertation all day so no photo yet I’m afraid.
Moving on, and the chest of drawers has been joined by a wardrobe. Just a small one for now – we only really needed somehwere to hang stuff up since the drawers will do just fine fo things that can be folded. Eventually we’ll get a bigger (and probably slightly more expensive) wardrobe for our room in the new flat, but that wasn’t the purpose of this weekend’s mission.
And now let’s take a trip to the livign room…
Here you see Detolf, the cabinet. I am so overjoyed to finally have some storage space! Those plates you see at the bottom had been living on on the floor gathering dust up to now. Finally, after a little more than a year, I’ve managed to find them a home…
And that brings us to my final photo.
It’s a lamp! Eventually it’s place will be next to the sofa – which Jan will be bring with him from his flat. I actually can’t wait to have a sofa to snuggle up on! For now, though, the lamp has to be content with standing to one side of my living room, looking slightly lonely and out of place.
And that, my friends, is that. Not bad for an afternoon’s shopping.
And in other news, we had an appointment to look at another flat today. It was at 9:15 this morning, so I arranged to work from home today instaed of taking a half day and not starting til around 12 pm (and before you ask yes I did actually do work!). The flat was nice but would need a fair amount doing to it – like a proper kitchen putting in for one! – which of course would be expensive. Once again it all comes down to the money factor! We’l discuss it tonight though and I’m hoping a decision will have been made by Thursday at the latest. Stay tuned!
We went to IKEA yesterday and I am now sore! My arms hurt from carrying heavy furniture up three flights of stairs, my legs ache from walking up and down said stairs about six times, both with and without heavy furniture, my knees are stiff from bending down then getting back up then bending down again in a different place while putting the stuff together. But it was worth it – I now have a wardrobe to hang things in (we had been using the built in cupboard in the entrance area, but that has lots of shelf space and barely any room for hanging.. I’m so sick of finding Jan’s shirts draped over every one of my dining chairs!). We also bought the chest of drawers to match my bed because it was reduced by a ridiculous amount and a second bedside table to go with Jan’s bed as it was down to 9 euros from the original price of 49! Bargains all round. It made sense to get a second bedside table for Jan’s bed as it seems that’s what we’ll be using in the new place… while my beautiful, beautiful bed is relegated to the spare room where it will be used roughly every 2 years (I never get visitors). And I got a little cabinet to put wine glasses and things in, which means the plates and cups that had been living on the living room floor can now be moved into a cupboard. Hooray!
If anyone is interested I’ll post some photos of the new furniture later.
Now I’m going to do some dissertation until Jan wakes up, at which point it will be back to furniture building (I hear my arms protesting at the mere thought of it… ouch!).
Happy Easter everyone!
I am going to tell you about our experiences with various flats at some point – promise – but it’s been such a tiring week (despite my half day on Monday and the fact that it’s only Thursday – tomorrow being a Good Friday and therefore a holiday) that right now I’m too tired to think, never mind form coherent sentences. I’m very much looking forward to four whole days of lie ins! Not so much to all the dissertation work that’s waiting to be done during my long weeknd, but you can’t have everything, and I’m hoping to persuade the boyfriend to drive me to Roller on Saturday so I can buy a wardrobe. We’re supposed to be saving up for the move and the big holiday in August but I’m getting €445 back from the electricity company (I knew I hadn’t been using nearly as much as I’ve been paying for!) so I think I can spare a few euros for a wardrobe. And maybe a few more if I happen to see a bedside table I like.
Right now, though, I really must do some washing…
I’m at the French centre again. Can you believe it’s been almost a month since I’ve had internet access at home? I’m going mad here people. Mad I tell you!
The flat is starting to look good though. I bought a table and chairs yesterday. Now I can actually have people round and not have to force them to sit on the floor! Admittedly I still have a stack of boxes in one corner of the living room, but at least they’re stacked neatly so I don’t have to be ashamed of the mess. Also bought a cheap shelving unit thing from IKEA for the kitchen, so my food no longer has to live in the bedroom and my cups and glasses have their very own place to live. No more storing them in a cardboard box. Woo hoo! Once I actually have my own internet again I’ll see about putting a few pictures on here.
And in other news, in 2 weeks time I’m going to Paris! My Grandma turned 80 last month so my mum and aunt are bringing her to Paris as part of her birthday treat. What my Grandma doesn’t know is that a whole bunch of other family members are meeting them there, including another of my aunts who is flying all the way from New Zealand! When my mum mentioned it to me I decided I would like to come too, seeing as there’s now a train that gets you from Karlsruhe to Paris in 3 hours. So Jan booked train tickets last week and today we’re going to look at hotels. I can’t wait! Paris is excellent and it will be nice to see my Grandma again. I missed her surprise birthday party so I at least have to be there to surprise her in Paris.
I’m sure there is much more that I need to say, having been away for so long. But I didn’t come on here to try and beat the record for world’s longest blog post so I’ll leave it here. Hopefully I’ll be back with you properly soon. Not this month though – I can’t afford furniture, Paris and the internet on my wages. I paid my rent the other day and almost cried when I saw what my bank balance was reduced to…
No, I haven’t managed to get internet at home already. That would be way too efficient for me! I’m at the French-German cultural centre in Karlsruhe. Jan works for them sometimes, sorting out their computer problems, and so he has a key.
Thanks to everyone for the good wishes! I am starting to get settled in a little, but, as the title suggests, am almost entirely furnitureless. Actually, the bedroom is beginning to take shape. I have a bed, small chect of drawers, bookcase and have even hung up my dreamcatcher. I also have a fridge – not in the bedroom obviously. In the kitchen. The kitchen is far from sorted though. Most of my food is currently living on the bookcase, with the bigger stuff in a cardboard box next to the fridge. The kitchen is seriously lacking in storage space! So after next payday I shall have to do something about that.
And as for the living room… all I have in there is two beanbag style cushions to sit on. That is it. No sofa, no table, no shelves… not even a simple footstool. Instead the floor is littered with boxes and bags that are yet to be unpacked. I think I shall be ignoring that room for a while…
I got my very first item of mail at the new flat today! The lovely Katyboo, whose blog you should really read, sent me a housewarming present. A book (The Timewaster Letters) which looks excellent, a very pretty little makeup bag and the cutest little card ever. As soon as I am in a position to put photos on my blog again i shall take one and show you all. Thank you millions Katy!
Must go now – I worked til 6pm today and have to be back at work at 8am tomorrow in order to be allowed to go to my appointment at the bank on Thursday….
It’s been a beautiful day today, one of those that makes me realise autumn isn’t such a bad season after all. It was lovely and sunny and so warm, but not in a ridiculously boiling sun-stroke causing manner like it was back in August. Fabulous.
I stayed at Jan’s last night, which is why I wasn’t able to blog. My boyfriend is a computer scientist with no computer. Madness! We went to a furniture shop just outside Karlsruhe and Jan finally ordered a sofa for his flat. Yay! No more sitting on uncomfortable kitchen chairs. I can actually curl up and be comfortable while we’re watching TV… provided we can get his flat mate out of the way for long enough that is.
Today we’ve been to see a football match. I’m not a huge fan of football but I don’t mind it, so when Jan’s friend managed to get three tickets for the local footbal team, Karlsruhe SC, I said I would go along. They were playing against Wolfsburg. The first half was incredibly boring and if it hadn’t been such a nice day I would have regretted saying I would go. Things picked up a bit in the second half though and the final score was 2-1 to KSC. Towards the end Karlsruhe’s goalkeeper, Markus Miller, got injured. Fairly badly it seems . at least after a failed attempt at standing he was carried off on a stretcher! I’m not even sure what exactly happened, even though the action was pretty much in front of our block and I was even looking the right way. One minute a Wolfsburg player was running towards the goal, the next a bunch of people had somehow run into each other and the goalkeeper was lying on the floor. Crazy stuff!
And so another weekend is over. Tomorrow it’s back to work, but only for two days. On Tuesday evening we’re off to Dublin, where we’ll be spending the night in the airport before taking a flight to Newcastle at 6:20 the next morning. My brother is turning 18 on Thursday, hence the trip. I still haven’t actually bought him a present though. Anyone got an idea what to buy for an 18 year old boy? Suggestions in the comments box please…
