A Photo an Hour: 20 February 2016

A small miracle happened this weekend… I actually remembered to take part in photo an hour! (Unlike in January, when I remembered it right up until the night before then ignored my camera entirely in the morning). It was Fasnacht day in my small town, so I actually did something other than sit on the sofa for a change. It still wasn’t the most exciting of days, but you can’t have everything ๐Ÿ˜‰

10 a.m. Awake… ish. Can’t function until I have a cup of tea!

11 a.m. Cross stitching. Can’t show you what I’m working on yet ๐Ÿ˜‰

12 noon. Finishing cuppa number 2 before going for a shower.

1 p.m. (ish). I was actually in the shower at 1, so more like 20 past. Getting dressed for the day.

2 p.m. It was raining and not much was happening, so we decided to eat something before the parade started. I chose meat on a stick (sorry vegetarians).

3 p.m. Parade time! And the rain had actually stopped.

4 p.m. “Who’s going to clean up all the confetti before the trams get going again?”

4.30 p.m. Bonus photo because I didn’t take an even number. My loot from the parade! A group with an anti-vegan float gave me the sausage ๐Ÿ˜€ Not pictured: the world’s smallest carrot and my flowers (which were already in vases). Jan got even moooore sweets, two oranges and a leek.

5 p.m. We thought we’d pop back out to see what was happening post-parade. It turned out there wasn’t much point in being there if you weren’t part of one of the groups, so we quickly came home. This is my hat after I removed the confetti! Some lingered…

6 p.m. Back home drinking more tea. The yellow flowers in the background are from the Fasnacht parade.

7 p.m. Time to make tea!

8 p.m. Tea time! Bratkartofflen (potato fritters) with sausage plus fish and spinach. An odd combination, but it worked.

9 p.m. Having a beer while watching what turned out to be an awesome episode of Farscape. We’re nearly finished now… what will I do when there are no more episodes?!

10 p.m. Off to read a book in bed. I love my starry PJs!

I should really have taken another photo at 11, which is when I put down my book and turned out the light, but the camera was across the room and I was lazy… hence the bonus photo earlier in the post to keep things even ๐Ÿ˜‰

Foodie penpals: August 2015 reveal

The time has come again to reveal what I received in my latest foodie penpals package.

August ended up being a little different – I was originally matches to two people in England, but then the person who was supposed to send to me failed to contact the person who was supposed to send a package to her. Under the rules of Foofie Penpals, if you fail to contact one of your partners by the 13th of the month, you’re taken out of the running for that month and your two partners are rematched to each other.

Coincidentally, I was rematched to somebody I already know from the blogosphere. Alie is originally from Britain and now lives in Germany. She blogs about expat life in Germany and travel at Starting Over in Stuttgart. Go visit her ๐Ÿ™‚

Alie sent my package a little later than the deadline (with my agreement) as she had a trip to England planned and made the offer to also put some British goodies into my package. As it happens, I only had one request so most of the contents were German, but we’ll get to that.

My package arrived this morning and I immediately opened it up. Please try to ignore the fact that my photos were taken on the floor (again!) and my rug desperately needs hoovering…

I swear my penpal packages get better every month! I just hope I’m doing as good a job with the ones I send out! Here’s what Alie sent me in detail:

Teabags

Tea bags! I can’t wait to try them, especially the Caramel Apple Pie ones. They sound perfect for autumn!

Apple chips

Apple chips. But not just any apple chips – Swabian ones ๐Ÿ˜‰ A nice healthy snack for me to munch on.

Desserts

Dessert items. Two Angel Delight type things that I just need to add milk to and a pack for making lemon-flavoured frosting. Yum! I think I need to do some baking soon…

Sweets

Sweeties. A Double Decker, which was my one request from the UK (for some reason I really fancied one – and yes, I ripped it open as soon as I was finished photographing my goodies!)and Grรผn-Schnabel (Green beak) gummi sweets. I’ve never tried these, but I love Katja’s pig sweets so these are bound to be yum.

Food

An Indian spice mix and a herbes de provence spread. Jan and I both enjoy Indian food and I can’t wait to give this spice mix a try! And I bet the spread will be good on toast or crackers.

Just how amazing is that package? I am a very lucky foodie indeed!

Alie also sent me a card, and even drew her own little stamp on the envelope. Love it!

Again, the person I was sending to doesn’t have a blog, but I took a quick photo before placing her goodies in the envelope. Here’s what I sent (this time I actually took the photo on the table, like a normal person!)

Swiss food

Back to reality

I really need to stop eating the sweets I got for Christmas. I had so much chocolate yesterday I’m surprised I wasn’t sick. I also had fruit pastilles, crisps and a twix. I am officially a pig. Maybe I should have put something about getting fit on the list of resolutions, cos at this rate I’m serious danger of becoming as big as a beached whale. Hmmm.

Anyway, I go back to work tomorrow. This shouldn’t really come as a shock to me. It has been pretty much inevitable since the day I finished for Christmas. I think my subconcious must have been shielding me from it or something. Then last night the barrier broke and I lay awake for hours dreading it, despite the fact that I still have today to mentally prepare myself.
In case you hadn’t guessed by now I don’t actually want to go back. I’m afraid that I’m going to have forgotten how to do everything, that I’ll make the same mistakes as last year. I know I should think positive, and I have been trying but the little man inside me head keeps screaming things like “remember when they told you you have no social competence” and “what are you going to do when you run out of work then? You never did figure that one out, did you?”. Ugh, shut up little man! Also, my internship is due to end on 31st January. That’s 18 working days (I just counted on the calendar). Right now I’m still torn between praying they offer me a real job after that so that I know I have a job to go to and hoping they don’t want me to stay because I’m not sure I’d be able to cope with working there for another year or two.ย  Obviously if they do offer me a job I get to decide whether to take it or not, but I’m not sure I have much choice really. I have to work somewhere and it’s not like I’m drowning in job offers.

Oh well, there’s no point in worrying about it now. My first assessed piece for uni is due in soon and I haven’t even started it yet.
Oh yes, and, for the second day in a row, it’s snowing! It almost never snows in Karlsruhe! Must get out there later and take some photos…
